In 1872 the Kunkels and their six oldest children left Germany for the United States. They arrived in Highland on June 22, 1872, and settled in the old Village of Spring Mills. Their house, seen below, was on the west side of Harvey Lake Road, just north of present-day M-59, across the road from the old Spring Mills grist mill. Here their six youngest children were born.
