Dr. Lawrence C. Maugh, husband of Lois (Rowe) Maugh, was born June 26, 1902, the son of John and Ethel (Lawson) Maugh.  The family came from Ontario to Highland Township in 1907.  John Maugh purchased the old grist mill at Spring Mills which he ran until its closing in 1943.  Lawrence C. Maugh attended the University of Michigan, graduating in 1921 with a degree in civil engineering.  From 1921 to 1924 he taught engineering at South Dakota State University, from which he also earned a Masters of Science degree.  Returning to Ann Arbor he earned a Ph.D. in engineering mechanics in 1934, after which he joined the University of Michigan faculty.  He became a full professor in 1946 and served as acting head of the engineering department in 1961.  He retired in 1970 and died the following year.
