In addition to its pickle industry, Highland once boasted a number of successful stock breeders.  Archibald ("A.D.") DeGarmo was noted for his shorthorn cattle, Davis Beach raised Hampshire hogs, and Sheldon Thornton raised Merino sheep.  Even the Highland Pickle Works raised sheep, feeding up to 800 head on the slops produced by the vinegar works.  This photo shows local farmers lined up on south St. John Street to deliver their animals to the stockyards which once stood west of the elevator.  From here they would be shipped to market by rail.  The view is looking north up St. John Street.  The elevator is at the far right, while the "Highland House" hotel can be seen across Livingston Road.
