Even before Highland Station was platted in 1872, Methodists in the southeast portion of the township had been holding services for several years in the Union Schoolhouse (District 4) on the northeast corner of what is now M-59 and Milford Road. Then, in 1875 a Christian Association was formed by members of different Protestant denominations in Highland Station which, in 1881, built a church on the northeast corner of Centre (Milford Road) and Ruggles Streets, for use by the different denominations on alternate Sundays. In 1884, however, members of the association with Congregational leanings elected to join that denomination. A financial agreement was worked out between this group and the Methodists, allowing the latter continued use of the building on alternate Sunday afternoons until a separate Methodist church could be built. This was soon accomplished, with the Methodist Episcopal Church of Highland Station being dedicated on November 4, 1886. The photo below shows the Methodist church as it appeared early in its history, with its woodshed and horse barn in the rear.
