Lucy Mae Beach, the daughter of Davis and Susan Jane (Thomas) Beach, was named for her grandmother, Lucy (Davis) Beach, although she was most often called simply "Mae" by her family and friends. She was only ten years old when her mother died in 1893. Widely regarded as one of the prettier girls in Highland, she also had a reputation for being strong-willed. She did not always get along with her much-older father, although she greatly adored her older brother Ulysses.
