Archibald Denniston DeGarmo, better known simply as "A.D.," was married October 4, 1865, at North Plains, Ionia County, Michigan, to Emily Cornelia Olmsted.  She was born March 6, 1843, in Ionia County, the daughter of Jay and Austrus (Case) Olmsted.  The couple soon relocated to Highland where A.D. assumed control of the parental farm following his father's death in 1873.  Henry DeGarmo had for many years been active in the cattle industry, pioneering the introduction of Shorthorns into Michigan.  A.D. DeGarmo continued his father's breeding program and soon earned an impressive number of awards at fairs and other agricultual exhibitions.   The photo below shows A.D. and Emily (Olmsted) DeGarmo with their eight children on the porch of their Highland home, i.e., (standing, left to right) (i) Anna MaryDeGarmo, born January 8, 1871; (ii) Elias Samuel DeGarmo, born October 30, 1880; (iii) Dale DeGarmo, born September 22, 1877; (seated, left to right)  (iv) Henry Jay DeGarmo, born October 8, 1866; Emily (Olmsted) DeGarmo, mother; Archibald Denniston (A.D.)
