The Hagadorn family of Highland traces its origins to John Hagadorn, a native of Holland, who settled in Renesselar County, New York.  His son, John L. Hagadorn, removed to Polka, Steuben County, New York, where he married Dorcas Brown. The couple had eight children, including son Joseph V. Hagadorn, who was born January 6, 1827 [Note 1].  In 1834 the family came to Michigan, settling in Green Oak Township, Livingston County.  On November 7, 1850, Joseph V. Hagadorn married at Milford, Michigan, Caroline Johnson, the daughter of Philip and Hulda (Inman) Johnson [Note 2].  This marriage was short-lived, however, as his young bride died only six months later.  He thereafter married second, circa 1852, Almia Loomis, by whom he had five children before her death on July 4, 1863 [Note 3].

[1] - Note that in some references the family name is spelled "Hagadorne."

[2] - There is some confusion as to the date of this first marriage.  A biography of Joseph V. Hagadorn found in Portrait and Biographical Album of Oakland County, Michigan, Chapman Bros. (1891), pp. 422-423, says "In 1848 he was married in Milford Township to Caroline, daughter of Philip and Hulda (Inman) Johnson..."  This biography was published during his lifetime and presumably prepared with information he himself provided.  Yet LDS IGI files, apparently abstracted from Oakland County marriage records, give the date as November 7, 1850.  For what it is worth, the 1850 Census for Green Oak Township, Livingston County, Michigan, Family 1160, shows Joseph V. Hagadorn, apparently unmarried, living with his parents and siblings.

[3] - The 1860 Census for Green Oak Township, Family No. 639, shows Joseph V. Hagadorn and his second wife Almira with three children, i.e., Caroline, age 7; Charles, age 6, and Ida, age 3.  This means his second marriage to Amira Loomis must have occured soon after the death of his first wife in 1851, but before the birth of daughter Caroline in late 1852/ early 1853.  His biography cited above says this second marriage lasted fourteen years, but a transcript of gravestones in the Green Oak Union a/k/a Freewill Baptist Cemetery say Almira (Loomis) Hagadorn died July 4, 1863, at age 31 years, 6 months, 2 days.
