In 1869 Jonathan Clark Leonard paid $100 for two shares of stock in the new Holly, Wayne & Monroe Railroad.  He also gave the railroad the right-of-way through his farm on the condition that one northbound and one southbound train would stop in Highland each day.  When the first train passed through town in 1871 it stopped at the Leonard farm.  Jonathan's daughter - four-year old Cora - became the first Highland resident to ride the new railroad when the engineer gave her a short ride to the East Wardlow Road crossing.  In 1882 Jonathan Clark Leonard built a new home for his family; the stately brick house seen below.  It still stands as of 2009 on the northwest corner of Milford and West Wardlow Roads.
