BACK TO THE FAMILY PHOTO ALBUM PAGE Squire W. Rowe quickly grew to prominence in Highland, where he served multiple terms as township supervisor [1]. During the Civil War he raised a company of troops for the 18th Michigan Regiment and, as supervisor, acted as relief agent for war widows and orphans. In 1864 he was elected to the Michigan legislature on the Republican ticket and served during the session of 1865. He held that office at the time of his death on November 19, 1866. For more on his life and career, see the biographies here and here. In 1855 Squire W. Rowe built the magnificent house seen below, located on the north side of Lone Tree Road just west of Rowe Road. Known as "Stone Rowe," it is a registered Michigan Historical Site. For more on this home click here. [1] - Durant's History of Oakland County, Michigan (1877), pp. 206-207, says Squire W. Rowe "held the office of supervisor of his township twenty-one terms." At page 203, however, Durant gives a list of all of Highland's supervisors from 1835 to 1876, which indicates Squire W. Rowe held that position for a total of only six terms. Even if one includes Rowe's service as a justice of the peace, he did not serve "twenty-one terms" in township office. |
