Almon Burdick Ruggles, another son of Noble and Anna (Merchant) Ruggles, eventually acquired his father's farm in the southwest quarter of Section 22. As it turned out, this property lay directly in the path of the Holly, Wayne & Monroe Railroad (later merged into the Flint & Pere Marquette). Construction on the line was completed in 1871 and the following year Almon Ruggles, along with adjoining property owner Germain St. John, platted portions of their land along the railroad as the village of "Highland Centre" (soon called "Highland Station.") This 1872 map shows the location of Almon Ruggles' home, on the northeast corner of Milford and East Livingston Roads, as well as the residue of the original Ruggles farm east of the tracks. "Ruggles Street" in Highland Station is named in his honor.
