Original Highland Township Landowner

John Dunn

E 1/2 of SE 1/4 of Section 35         NW 1/4 of SW 1/4 of Section 36        NW 1/4 of SE 1/4 of Section 36

Little is known about this man beyond his name and the fact his patent gives his residence as Oakland County, Michigan.  He is likely the John Dunn of Ontario County, New York, who purchased land in Section 24 of Lyon Township, Oakland County, on June 6, 1831.  Assuming he settled on this parcel he would then be a resident of Oakland County at the time he made his purchase in Highland Township.  Note also the John Dunn of Oakland County who bought land in Section 1, Milford Township, Oakland County, on September 23, 1836; just two days after the purchase in Section 35 in Highland.  There is no evidence that he ever settled on his parcels in Highland.

A John Dunn, with wife Jane, bought and sold a number of parcels in Putnam and Hamburg Townships, Livingston County, in the 1840's, 50's and 60's.  The 1850 Census shows this man as born 1796 in England.  His wife Jane died February 22, 1878, at age 83 and is buried in North Hamburg Cemetery.  This John Dunn would thus have been old enough to have purchased land in Oakland County in the 1830's, and the proximity of Hamburg and Lyon Townships gives reason to think they might be the same person.
