Original Highland Township Landowner Peter Hartwick NW 1/4 of NE 1/4 of Section 35 Little is known about this man beyond his name and the fact his patent gives his residence as Oakland County, Michigan. The available evidence suggests he was the brother of the Nelson Hartwick who appears on the 1840 Census for Milford, Oakland County, Michigan, and thereafter on the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Censuses for Ingham County, Michigan. The family is said to have come from Prescott, Ontario, Canada. Note, in this regard, a Peter Hartwick, born March 31, 1806, at Longueil, Ontario, who is said to have married Martha Whaley and died August 28, 1875, at Grant, St. Clair County, Michigan. There was also a Peter Hartwick of London, Ontario, who married circa 1820 Sarah Miller. This Peter Hartwick was reportedly killed while cutting wood in the late 1830's, after which his widow moved to Mason, Ingham County, where she married second Mark Jacobs. Later in life she lived at Genoa Township, Livingston County. More research is obviously needed to confirm the identity of this man and establish whether or not he may have settled on his purchase in Highland Township. Note, however, that no Hartwick appears on the 1840 Census for Highland. |
