Benona Knapp

NE 1/4 of NE 1/4 of Section 34

Benona a/k/a Benoni Knapp was born February 6, 1797, at Cobleskill, Schoharie County, New York.  He married March 14, 1824, at Jerusalem, Yates County, New York, Esther Stoddard.   She was born November 25, 1805, at Cherry Valley, Otsego County, New York.  The couple thereafter moved to Ontario County, New York, where Benona was living at the time he purchased land in Armada Township, Macomb County, Michigan, on December 1, 1825.

Benona Knapp thereafter settled in Armada Township were he was elected a pound keeper at the first township meeting on April 7, 1834.  The following year, however, he moved to Oakland County, purchasing land in both White Lake and Highland Townships.  It seems clear he resided in White Lake where he appears on the 1840 Federal Census, 1845 Michigan State Census, and 1850 and 1860 Federal Censuses.

Esther (Stoddard) Knapp died December 11, 1861, at age 56 years, 21 days.  One source says she was buried at Highland Cemetery.  Following her death Benona Knapp relocated to Olive, Clinton County, Michigan, where he appears on both the 1870 and 1880 Censuses.  He died at Olive on June 8, 1886, at age 89.
