Original Highland Township Landowner Wm. (William) H. Newell Nothing is known about this man beyond his name and residence as given in his patents. Efforts to find a William or Wm. H. Newell on any Michigan census from 1840 to 1860 have thus far proved unsuccessful. Note, however, the Silas Newel(l) living in Rose Township on the 1845 Michigan State Census. Given the number of parcels Wm. H. Newell purchased in Section 16 it would seem he was engaged in speculation rather than seeking land on which to settle. Note that F. W. Beers & Co., Atlas of Oakland County, Michigan (1872) does not show him as owning any land in Section 16, suggesting he had disposed of all his parcels by that time.
