Original Highland Township Landowner Lewis Roe Little is known of this man beyond his name and the fact his patent gives his residence as Tioga County, New York. Strange as it may seem, he does not appear to be related to Daniel Row/Roe, even though both purchased land in Section 32 within a year of each other. Histories of the Row/Roe/Rowe family do not show Daniel Row/Roe as having either a brother or son named Lewis. A Lewis Roe of Southport, Chemung County, was married there to Caroline Strong on March 7, 1833. Since Chemung lies immediately to the west of Tioga County this is possibly the man who purchased land in Highland. But note the Lewis "Row" on the 1835 New York State Census for Chemung County. In all events it does not appear Lewis Roe settled on his purchase, since he was still residing in Tioga County, New York, when issued a patent for land in Section 9, Milford Township, on August 3, 1839.
