Original Highland Township Landowner

Germain St. John

NW 1/4 of NE 1/4 of Section 27

Germain St. John (frequently misspelled as "German") was born August 16, 1817, the son of Enos Frost and Martha (Waterbury) St. John.  In the late 1830's he and other members of his family came to Highland Township, Oakland County, Michigan.  Although Germain St. John acquired a patent for land in Section 27, he actually settled on the W 1/2 of the SW 1/4 of Section 22, originally purchased by Jonathan Leonard.  In 1849 Highland Township bought a portion of his land in Section 22 for use as the Highland Centre Bury-ground; now simply Highland Cemetery.

Germain St. John married Emily Renwick who was born in 1820.  The couple appear on the 1850 Census for Highland Township with their two children, May (Mary Marana) age 5, and "Germam" (Germain W.), age 2.  Emily (Renwick) St. John died April 1, 1889, at age 69 years, 18 days.  Germain St. John himself died December 3, 1897.
