Original Highland Township Landowner

Allen Stephens (Stevens)

SE 1/4 of NE 1/4 of Section 29

Little is known about this man beyond his name and the fact his patent gives his residence as Oakland County, Michigan.  He is probably the Allen "Stevens" who, with wife Martha, was living in Highland Township, Oakland County, when he bought land in Section 1 of Brighton Township on March 8, 1843, See: Milton Charboneau, First Landowners of Livingston County, Michigan.   This, in turn, is no doubt the Allen "Stephens" who appears on a list of Brighton taxpayers made later that year.  He sold his Brighton property in 1849, however, after which he seems to disappear from the records.

An Allen Stephens with a wife Martha appears on the 1850 Census for Novi, Oakland County, but his age (29) would mean he was born circa 1821; too late to be the man who purchased property in Highland in 1836.  Note also the John Stephens who appears on the 1840 Census for Highland, who may be related to Allen in some fashion.
