Original Highland Township Landowner

Benjamin Upson

S 1/2 of NE 1/4 of Section 25

Benjamin Upson was born circa 1805, the son of Daniel and Rachel (Crosby) Upson of Steuben County, New York.   He appears on the 1830 Census for Hornell, Steuben County, age 20-30, living adjacent to his father.  Others living nearby are an Asa Upson, age 30-40, and John Upson, age 20-30, who are thought to be brothers.

As a resident of Hornell it seems certain Benjamin Upson knew the Rev. George Hornell and may have accompanied or else soon followed him to Highland Township, Oakland County, Michigan.   Benjamin Upson thereafter appears on the 1840 Census for Highland, age 30-40, with a wife, son and several daughters.  What happened to the family after that time is uncertain.  He does not appear on the 1845 Michigan State Census for Highland and no Benjamin Upson can be found in Michigan on the 1850 Federal Census.
