Original Highland Township Landowner

Cornelius Van Name

W 1/2 of NW 1/4 of Section 36

Cornelius Van Name was born circa 1801 in Union, Broome County, New York, the son of William and Mary (Mersereau) Van Name of Staten Island, New York, See: New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Vol. XXVIII, No. 1, p. 21 (January, 1897).  All of the available evidence indicates he lived his entire life in Broome County and never settled on his purchase in Section 36, Highland Township.  He is probably the "C. Vanname" on the 1840 Census for Chenango, Broome County.  He thereafter appears on the 1850 Census for Chenango, Broome County, as "Cornelius Vanname," age 49.   In 1858 a local paper noted the death of Rachel Perkins on November 10th; adding that she was "Sister to Joshua and Cornelius Van Name of this town."   Cornelius Van Name's own death was likewise reported as having occured at Fenton, Broome County, on July 15, 1867, in his 66th year.
