Original Highland Township Landowner

Joseph Voorheis

NE 1/4 of SW 1/4 of Section 1

Joseph Voorheis was born October 28, 1787, at Somerset County, New Jersey, the son of Isaac and Sarah (Nevius) Voorhees.  He married November 15, 1810, Virginia Margaret Dunlap, daughter of Robert and Nancy (Giles) Dunlap, and resided in Pennsylvania and New York before coming to Michigan circa 1832-34.  He settled in Pontiac, Oakland County, where he died December 9, 1865.   He had a large family and purchased land throughout Oakland County; some of which was later owned by his children.   First Land Owners of Oakland County spells the last name "Voorhies," but the actual patent and most other references give the spelling "Voorheis."  There is no evidence Joseph Voorheis ever settled on his purchase in Highland Township.
