Highland had originally contracted with Milford Township to provide fire protection.  When Milford terminated that agreement in 1941, however, Highland voters approved a proposal to establish the township's own volunteer fire department, with Claude Hale serving as the first fire chief.  As noted previously, the 1890 Township Hall was modified to house the first fire engine - a 1941 Chevrolet   known as as "Ole No. 1."  In 1948 the first fire siren was installed on the old Town Hall roof, made from the base of a farm windmill and World War II surplus air raid sirens obtained from the City of Pontiac.  The first tanker truck was acquired in 1954.  By the time this photograph was taken in the mid-1960's the township offices had moved to their new location on North John Street.
