The Highland Township Fire Department's service to the community has traditionally extended well beyond fighting fires.  The first "Goodfellows" newspapers were sold in 1949, and the Department has engaged in a number of charitable efforts ever since.  In 1965 it began to purchase and loan out basic supplies such as crutches and walkers to those in need, and funds are regularly disbursed to help fire victims, families needing heating assistance in winter, and other good causes.  Highland residents are justly proud of their Fire Department and shown a consistent willingness to support its operations.  This photo shows  former fire chiefs Clarence Carlson, Robert Lamphier, and Asa Smith during a "Goodfellows" paper drive circa 1980.
