The final page of the catalogue includes a list of the various texts used.  "Appleton's" were a series of graded school "readers" (similar to the more famous McGuffy readers) published by D. Appleton and Company of New York.  The same company also published the geography, writing and arithmatic texts listed.  "Orthography" is the proper use of letters to represent sounds, or what today might be called "phonics."  "Pattengill's" refers to A Manual of Orthography and Elementary Sounds authored by Henry Romaine Pattengill; a noted Michigan educator who was a professor of English at Michigan Agricultural College, secretary of the State Teachers Association and publisher of the Michigan School Moderator.  Many of these readers and textbooks can still be found in used book stores and several have been scanned and posted online by Google Books.  It is thus possible to compare and contrast the curriculum of the 1890's with that of today.
