When the original West Highland (District No. 1) schoolhouse burned in 1928 it was replaced by the wood frame building shown in this photo.  After the various district schools were closed and consolidated in the late 1930's, the West Highland school building was itself relocated to Highland Station at the southeast corner of Ruggles and North John Streets.  Here it served for many years as the so-called "Kindergarten Cottage," preparing smaller children to attend the Highland Township School directly across John Street.  Many students will never forget the creative and energetic Mrs. Paul Sinclair, who taught here.
