The earliest gas pumps were ornate cast iron columns topped by clear glass cylinders.  The amount of gas desired was pumped by hand into the glass cylinder, then fed by gravity through the hose and nozzle.  The glass cylinders allowed the customer to make sure he was getting all the gas he had paid for.
