It did not take long for the Smiths to become two of Highland's best known and most beloved citizens. Local residents knew to fill up with gas on Saturday, since Sundays would find the couple at the old Methodist Church, where Asa served as usher and bell ringer. Jeanie was a teacher at the old Grubb Road School, formerly at the corner of East Livingston and Duck Lake Roads. She also served on the Highland Library Board and as Secretary of the Huron Valley Board of Education.
