The Milford Times for April 7, 1922, opined that "The one-room district school is out of date and is bound to be done away for something better - or something the people think will be better. The change may be delayed, but it is bound to come." In the case of the Highland a/k/a Union School, such change came in the late 1930's with the construction of M-59. Bypassing Highland Station to the north, the new highway was built over a portion of old Spring Mills Road between Downey Lake and Milford Road. The work included replacement of the railroad grade crossing with a viaduct under the tracks. The resulting excavation, shown in the photo below, took away so much of the school yard that the building was no longer safe for children to use. Instead, with $5,250.00 contributed by the state, and another $25,000.00 raised through a bond, a new, multi-room school was built on North John Street (now a part of Highland Middle School).
