Given his unique first name, Squire W. Rowe seemed destined to become a man of prominence. Born June 1, 1815, at Camillus, Onondaga County, New York, he removed to Parma, Monroe County, New York, where he married Dolly Castle on March 26, 1835. A few months later the couple came to Highland Township where they settled on land in Sections 29 and 32. In short order Squire W. Rowe became active in township government, serving several terms as a justice of the peace and an incredible 25 [but others say 21] terms as township supervisor. Finally, in 1864, he was elected a member of the Michigan legislature, which office he held at the time of his death on November 19, 1866. His name lives on in the names of nearby Rowe Road and Rowe Lake.
