Around 1860 a new frame school was built on the west side of Hickory Ridge Road, across from the West Highland Cemetery.  It was enlarged with a second room in the late 1870's.  Like the community it served, this school was originally called simply the "Highland School."  The school at Highland Station was intially called either the "Station School" or "Union School."  Over time, however, the school on Hickory Ridge Road came to be known as the "West Highland School."  This is a view of the 1860's schoolhouse looking south.
