1850 Federal Census Of Highland Township,
Oakland County, Michigan
Introduction
This is a verbatim transcription of the 1850 Federal Census of
Highland Township, Oakland County, Michigan, preserving the format, spellings and
abbreviations found in the original microfilmed census rolls. For example, if the
original record uses the abbreviation "Geo" with no period, it is so transcribed
rather than substituting "George" or "Geo." There are two
exceptions to this practice: (1) Periods are added to abbreviated surnames such as
"St. John," and (2) ditto marks ["] and/or the abbreviation "Do."
have been replaced with the word or abbreviation they reference. This will facilite
finding such names or words using your browser's "find" command or the site's
search engines. Where the handwriting on the original census roll is illegible or
unclear the entry is flagged with a question mark (?). Unusual or phonetic spellings
of names and words is preserved, but the more common or preferred spelling will be given
either in brackets and/or in notes which follow the given family's entry.
All of the 21 pages of this census indicate they were enumerated
by S. Stevens, Ass't Marshall, in October, 1850. The specific date each page was
completed is given under its page number. In theory all data is as of June 1, 1850,
but it is often helpful to also know the date a specific entry was made.

Both this and the following entry have the same dwelling and
family numbers. Silvia Corwin and Wm. Corwin above were married in the past year,
and thus should have been included together in one household. Note that William
Corwin was the brother of Ezra Corwin above.

It seems doubtful that Mary Summer would attend school at age
3. Rather, it was probably George Summer, age 5, who was the scholar and the check
mark was placed in the wrong row.

The original census record clearly spells the last name of
this family as "Dougless," yet we know from other sources that this is actually
the family of Noble Ruggles, born 1797, who married Anna Merchant. Ancestry.com
indexes the family as "Dougless," but gives "Ruggles" as "another
possible name." Daughter Lorena Ruggles married Newton Babcock.

This
is the family of Oliver Wolcott Armstrong. His wife Orpha was first married to
Stephen Armstrong, and at his death married Stephen's nephew, Oliver W. Her children
thus had the same surname, even though born to different fathers.

This
is Squire Washington Rowe, born June 1, 1815, at Camillus, Onondaga county; married March
26, 1835, at Parma, Monroe County, New York, Dolly Castle. The family came to
Highland in 1835 where Squire W. Rowe soon became a man of prominence, serving over twenty
terms as township supervisor before being elected to the Michigan legislature in 1864.
His parents, Daniel and Polly, usually employed an older spelling of the family
name "Roe" while Squire and his family favored the spelling "Rowe."

This is Benjamin F. Davison, the son of Norman and Huldah
(Brown) Davison, b. April 12, 1821, at Avon, Livingston County, New York; m. 1st Huldah N.
Gue, daughter of Solomon and Joanna (Lewis) Gue; m. 2nd Sarah Sophia Wells, daughter of
Philip and Sophia (Fuller) Wells. The gender given for Benjamin above is obviously
in error, but is so recorded on the original census roll. Margrett, age 23, is
actually Mariette Davison, the sister of Benjamin F. Davison. Although not indicated
on this or any other census, she was blind and lived with her brother her entire life.

This family's surname looks like "Richman" and it is
so indexed by Ancestry.com. Other evidence, however, indicates the surname should be
spelled "Richmond." Ancestry.com likewises indexes the first name of the
head of household as "Alver" although it is actually "Abner." It
is unclear what the "F" means for the occupation of Jane. It seems the
census taker may have started to write "Farmer," then realized his error.
In that case, however, one would expect the "F" to have been crossed out.

Even through written twice, the surname of this family is
impossible to decipher. As noted, the entry on page 342 appears to begin with
"Feu" whereas the entry on page 343 looks like "Fi" (including the
tittle over the "i"). Ancestry.com indexes this family as
"Feinman" although there is nothing to suggest the family was of German and/or
Jewish extraction. The presence of the aged Samuel Gregory in the household suggests
he was the father of Cornelia Feumann/Finnan, which may help establish the family's
identity.

There is some question as to whether this family's surname is
Everts or Hinkley. The actual entry reads "G G Everts" followed by ditto
marks (") under the name Hinkley in family 2333.

The
original census roll has brackets linking the names of Garret and Frank to indicate they
are twins. While his occupation is shown as "Farmer," Jacob Vanvalkenburg
a/k/a Van Valkenburg was also a successful attorney, as evidenced by the value of his real
estate. He was one of the delegates from Oakland County to both the 1850 and 1867
Michigan Constitutional Conventions.

It seems unlikely Rachel attended school at age 38.
Rather, it appears the check mark should have been placed in the row for Benj. Note
also the children named Elizabeth and Betsy (a nickname for Elizabeth). Either the
age of Betsy and/or her place of birth seems wrong. If truly 9 years of age, then
she would presumably have been born in New York, as were her next two siblings. If
truly born in Michigan, then she would presumably be age 6 or less.

Michael
Beach was actually born in either Connecticut or (more likely) New York. He served
in the War of 1812, then came to Michigan circa 1818, settling first in Troy, Oakland
County. He thereafter removed to Highland circa 1833. Son George Beach was
actually born in Michigan. It is likely the value of real estate should be in the
row for Michael; not son George.

This
is Wellington Cleveland Burnett, son of Lester and Olive (Brown) Burnett, born September
21, 1828 (but others say 1829), at Hampton, Windham County, Connecticut. Lester
Burnett came to Michigan in the 1830's and initially settled in Livingston County where he
and others platted the Village of Hamburg. Circa 1840, however, he sold his interest
and moved to Highland Township. His son, Wellington C. Burnett, enlisted in the army
during Mexican War and rose to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, 15th Reg., serving with
distinction at the Valley of Mexico, Contreras, Churubusco, El Molino del Rey,
Chapultepec, and Mexico City. After the war he attended school in Ohio and Cambridge
Law School before eventually moving to California in 1854, where he became a noted
lawyer. He served as a justice of the peace, city attorney and in 1856 was elected
to the California senate on the Know-Nothing/Native American party ticket. He also
served as brigadier-general of the California National Guard under the administration of
Governor John Neely Johnson. Wellington C. Burnett's family papers, including
letters to/from his wife, are in the Henry E. Huntington Library and have been cited in
several recent books about 19th century family life.

It
is unclear why E W Kent should be shown as attending school. It is more likely the
check mark should be in the row for John Lane, age 7, in family 2384 above.
