On December 1, 1906, Ulysses S. Beach began work as a rural mail carrier, driving a route that stretched from Highland Station to Hartland. In good weather he used a small enclosed mail wagon, seen in a previous photo. In winter he used a cab mounted on runners. This photo was taken by Will Lemmon at his farm on Tipsico Lake Road in February, 1912, and shows Ulysses S. Beach delivering mail in the snow. The sleigh is being pulled by "Clay;" one of two horses used on his 29 mile route. His other horse, "Colonel," was driven on alternate days. They were later replaced by a succession of Ford Model T's, a 1928 Ford Model A and a 1932 Ford V-8, before Beach retired from the postal service on January 31, 1939.
