Although Highland Township had been organized two years before the Wardlow's settlement, it was still largely wilderness.  One account notes that at the time they arrived "Deer and wolves were in plenty, and bears were occasionally seen."  Like other pioneer families, their first home was a log cabin, built on the original 80 acres.  Some years later, James Wardlow added to his holdings by purchasing an additional 80 acres in the southeast quarter of Section 14, south of Wardlow Road.  Both of these parcels can be seen on this 1872 map.
