This photo, taken circa 1920, shows the Highland Free Will Baptist Church looking southwest from the intersection of Hickory Ridge and Clyde Roads.   Note the directional sign fixed to the telephone pole, directing Detroit-bound motorists to turn left (south) on Hickory Ridge Road.  This sign was apparently sponsored by the Wolverine Automobile Club of Detroit - a precursor of AAA Michigan.   In addition to posting roads before the days of official road signage, the Wolverine Automobile Club also published maps and guide books, was active in early Detroit Automobile Shows, and otherwise promoted the interests of early automobile owners.
