As noted previously, Major F. Lockwood built a gristmill on the upper or north water power in 1856.  That building went through several changes of ownership over its 90 year history.  In 1859 Lockwood sold the mill to J.B. Baker, who took possession on January 1, 1860.  Baker, in turn, sold it in 1864 to Daniel B. Chatfield and Robert Boyce.  The following year Chatfield bought out Boyce's interest and ran the mill by himself until 1868, when he sold it to J. B. Crouse.  Crouse, in turn, sold the mill to W. C. Lockwood in 1871.  From 1888 to 1900 the mill was owned by Henry Elliott, who then sold it to McFarland & Sons.  Finally, in 1907, it was purchased by John Maugh, for whom it was often called the Maugh mill.  The photo below shows the mill looking northeast.  Note the name "Spring Mills" painted over the porch roof.  Under this can be faintly seen the name "Lockwood."
