This is a view of the Spring Mills gristmill looking south-southwest, showing the mill race which brought water from a dam on Pettibone Creek to the north. Back in the days when coin and currency were scarce, the miller received payment for his services by using a wooden "toll box" to measure out one-tenth (approximately 6 pounds) of each bushell of grain brought for milling. This he ground into flour for his own use and/or to barter for other goods and services.
