The millpond which powered the Maugh gristmill was a popular spot for swimming, summer picnics and other gatherings. This photo, taken in the 1930's, shows (left to right) Lawrence Maugh, Louise Beach, Irvin Kunkel and Clara Mae Beach sitting in front of the old mill. Lawrence was the son of the mill's owner, John Maugh. The old mill remained in operation until 1943, when it was razed. The site was thereafter acquired by the Michigan Department of Conservation (now Department of Natural Resources) and incorporated into Highland State Recreation Area.
