The first hotel building on this site was built in the 1870's, but on April 26, 1895, a fire burned both the hotel and its adjoining livery stable. The owner, James Beaumont, first rebuilt the livery which, on July 3, 1896, held a celebratory dance before the horses, carriages and wagons were moved in. To save expenses, a former hospital building was found near Au Sable, Michigan, which was dismantled and its lumber shipped by rail to Highland. Here is was rebuilt into a new hotel, similar in appearance to that which had burned. Both this and the previous photo show the replacement building.
