BACK TO THE FAMILY PHOTO ALBUM PAGE "Ulie" Beach had a varied and interesting career. Growing up he assisted his father on the parental farm. As a young man he briefly taught at the Excelsior School in Highland, not far from where Heritage Elementary now stands. When the Spanish-American War broke out in 1898, however, he enlisted in the army and was sent to Puerto Rico. On his return home he learned telegraphy and worked several years at different railroad stations in southeastern Michigan. He also spent one winter as a lumberjack near Seeney, in the Upper Peninsula. On May 14, 1902, he married at Highland, Michigan, Edith Emma Huff. The photo below is the couple's wedding portrait.
