Elijah Dunham was the son of Ebenezer and Anne/Hannah (Denne) Dunham of Mayfield, New York.  He came to Highland Township, Oakland County, Michigan, with his brothers, Jacob S. Dunham and Daniel Dunham.  He thereafter appears on the 1840 Federal Census and 1845 Michigan State Census for Highland Township.
