Original Highland Township Landowner

Jonathan Eddy

N 1/2 of SW 1/4 of Section 5         S  pt of NW F. 1/4 of Section  5        NE pt of NW F. 1/4 of Section  5

Little is presently known about this man.  First Land Owners of Oakland County gives his residence as "Wayne Co., MI" but inspection of the actual patent shows it is actually Wayne County, New York.  The same source indicates that Oakland County records give his date of purchase as October 31, 1835.

Jonathan Eddy was associated in some fashion with James S. Hickey, who was likewise from Wayne County, New York.  On the day both men received their patents for land in Section 5 of Highland Township, they were also issued patent No. 14704 as joint owners of 123.84 acres in Section 31 of Brighton Township, Livingston County, Michigan.  Note that a Jonathan Eddy appears on the 1830 Census for Perry, Wayne County, New York, and on the 1840 Census for Marion, Wayne County, New York.  A James Hickey likewise appears on the 1830 Census for Palmyra, Wayne County, New York, and on the 1840 Census for Troy, Oakland County, Michigan.

Durant's 1877 History of Oakland County, Michigan, pp. 202-203, notes that one Harden Eddy was the first burial in Highland Cemetery.  There is likewise an Allen W. Eddy who appears on the 1850 Census for Highland and is himself buried in Highland Cemetery.  Whether either is related to Jonathan Eddy, however, is unclear.
