Original Highland Township Landowner

James S. Hickey

S pt of NE F. 1/4 of Section 5
SW 1/4 of SW 1/4 of Section 12

Little is presently known about this man.  First Land Owners of Oakland County gives his residence as "Wayne Co., MI," but inspection of the actual patent shows it is actually Wayne County, New York

James S. Hickey was associated in some fashion with Jonathan Eddy, who was likewise from Wayne County, New York.  On the day both men received their patents for land in Section 5 of Highland, they were also issued patent No. 14704 as joint owners of 123.84 acres in Section 31 of Brighton Township, Livingston County, Michigan.  Note that a James Hickey appears on the 1830 Census for Palmyra, Wayne County, New York, and on the 1840 Census for Troy, Oakland County, Michigan.  A Jonathan Eddy likewise appears on the 1830 Census for Perry, Wayne County, New York, and on the 1840 Census for Marion, Wayne County, New York.

The James Hickey (no "S") who purchased land in Section 12 of Highland Township with Oliver Baldwin is likely the same as the James S. Hickey who purchased land in Section 5.  This Oliver Baldwin is probably the one on the 1840 Census for Troy, Oakland County.  As noted above, a James Hickey is also found in Troy on the same census.
