Original Highland Township Landowner

Myndert (Mindret) W. Gardner

NW 1/4 of SW 1/4 of Section 34

Myndert (also Mindret, Minute, etc.) W. Gardner was born March 29, 1814, at Warren, Herkimer County (but others say Deerfield, Oneida County), New York, the son of William and Mary (Wightman, nee Randall) Gardner.  William Gardner is said to have hailed from Connecticut and saw service in the War of 1812.  He appears on the 1830 Census for Warren, Herkimer County, New York, but soon after came to Michigan where he took up land in Section 2 of Milford Township, Oakland County.  Son Myndert Gardner settled just north of his father's purchase, locating in Section 34 of Highland Township.

Myndert Gardner married January 11, 1837, at Tyrone, Livingston County, Lydia M. Armstrong, the daughter of Erastus and Roxana (Stowell) Armstrong.  She was born June 3, 1818 in Fabius, Onondaga County, New York, and was the sister of LeRoy a/k/a Lorenzo LeRoy Armstrong; another original Highland landowner.

"Minute" Gardner thereafter appears on the 1840 Census for Highland, but soon removed to Tyrone, Livingston County, Michigan, where he appears on the 1850 Census.  He died at Tyrone on April 13, 1860.  His widow, Lydia (Armstrong) Gardner, died at Tyrone on March 9, 1900.  Both are buried at theTyrone Memorial (Old Gardner) Cemetery.
