Original Highland Township Landowner

Gershom Holdridge

E 1/2 of SW 1/4 of Section 15

Gershom Holdridge was born in 1768 and married circa 1789 Rebecca Crouch.  She was born circa 1768, the daughter of Aaron and Rebecca (Buell) Crouch.  Gershom lived at Riga Center, Monroe County, New York, where he died October 11, 1846.  Among his children was a daughter, Roxanna Holdridge, born circa 1792, who married John Thrasher.  They are the parents of Charles S. Thrasher, who also purchased land in Section 15 adjoining that of Gershom Holdridge.  Another daughter, Rebecca C. Holdridge, was born March 29, 1804 and married Alvah Tenny, who was himself an original Highland landowner.

First Land Owners of Oakland County gives the date of Gershom's purchase June 25, 1838.   This is impossible, however, since his actual patent is clearly dated April 1, 1837 - more than a year before his supposed date of purchase.  Given that other the patents issued in April, 1837, were for purchases made in 1835 the correct date is more likely June 25, 1835.
