Original Highland Township Landowner Emmaline a/k/a Emeline (Rooks) Howland Emmaline a/k/a Emeline (Rooks) Howland was the wife of Hozial J. Howland. He was born July 11, 1811, in New York, the son of Hoziel and Wealthy (Warren) Howland. The family came to Michigan in the early 1830's, with the elder Hoziel eventually settling in Elba, Lapeer County. Son Hozial J. and Emmaline (Rooks) Howland, however, settled in Highland Township where the family appears on the 1840 Census as "Hosiah" Howland. Another son, John Richmond Howland, settled in White Lake Township. John's wife was Elizabeth Rhodes, daughter of Ezekiel and Anna (Greatsinger) Rhodes, and the sister of John Rhoads/Rhodes, another original Highland landowner. |
