Original Highland Township Landowner John Rhoads a/k/a Rhodes W 1/2 of SW 1/4 of Section 1 John Rhodes a/k/a Rhoades was born June 21, 1797, at Esopus, Ulster County, New York, the son of Ezekiel and Anna (Greatsinger) Rhodes. He settled in White Lake Township, Oakland County, Michigan, where he is said to have built the first tavern in that township in 1834. His sister, Elizabeth Rhodes, married John Richmond Howland of White Lake Township.
