Original Highland Township Landowner Abner Hyde Abner Hyde was born June 4, 1793, at Franklin, New London County, Connecticut, the son of Capt. Milton and Lovice C. (Hyde) Hyde. He married March 7, 1816, his third cousin, Mary Bailey, the daughter of Arron and Hannah (Ladd) Bailey, who was born January 28, 1794, at Franklin, See: Reuben H. Walworth, Hyde Genealogy: Descendants in the Female as well as in the Male Lines from William Hyde of Norwich, J. Munsell, Albany (1864), Vol. I, p. 670. The couple lived in Franklin and nearby Norwich, Connecticut, until 1832-33 when Abner and his son-in-law, Noah P. Morse, brought their families to Highland Township, Oakland County, Michigan. Durant, History of Oakland County, Michigan, says they arrived in May, 1833, but this was the date they entered their respective parcels, at which time both were already said be be residents of Oakland County, Michigan. It seems likely their actual arrival was earlier and that they may have stayed for a time with John C. Morse, brother of Noah, who settled in Highland and made his own purchase some months previous. Abner and Mary (Bailey) Hyde did not live long in their new home; she dying August 15, 1837, followed by her husband on September 30, 1837. During his brief residence he served as a justice of the peace and, in the fall of 1834, saw his daughter Mary and her husband, Job Cranson, become the first couple ever married in Highland Township. |
