Erastus Underwood

NW 1/4 of SW 1/4 of Section 14         E 1/2 of SE 1/4 of Section 15        NE 1/4 of NW 1/4 of Section 15

Erastus Underwood was born November 12, 1804, the son of Evander/Vander and Jerusha (Wood) Underwood of Freetown, Cortland County, New York.  He married circa 1829 Laura a/k/a Lura Holmes, daughter of Roswell Holmes, a Revolutionary veteran.  The family soon after came to Highland where Erastus Underwood appears on the 1840 Census.  He died at Clyde, Highland Township, on September 15, 1861.  See: Lucien Marcus Underwood, The Underwood Families of America, New Era Printing Co., Lancaster, Pennsylvania (1913), Vol. 1, pp. 242-243.  Vander Underwood, the son of Erastus Underwood, was a soldier in the Mexican War.  Albertus Underwood, another son, was a farmer at Clyde.
