In the 1880's, however, some believed the rich "bottom land" of White Lake - as well as adjacent Duck Lake - was more valuable than its natural beauty.  With an average depth of only 12.3 feet, White Lake could be drained to yield more productive farmland.  Such an attempt was made in 1886.  As the Milford Times reported on September 18th of that year, "Sportsmen and picknickers will be sorry to learn that the contract for draining Duck Lake and White Lake has been let by the surveyor and the work is actively going on."  The photo below shows the outlet of the drain constructed on Duck Lake.
