By the turn of the century, however, efforts to drain White Lake were abandoned. Instead, landowners such as James Lockwood began to recognize and actively develop the lake's recreational potential. In 1899, for example, the Milford Times reported that: "A recent visit to the James Lockwood camping ground demonstrates to our mind that White Lake is bound to be a summer resort... Mr. Lockwood has added several more cottages and boats and now has the facilities for acommodating the public." The "Pretty Spot" on White Lake shown on this old postcard appears to show rowboats on the beach at "Grove Point Summer Resort;" the Lockwood camp at the lake's south end.
