Another unique feature of the Hickory Ridge School was its twin front doors - one for use by boys; the other by girls. The open left door shown in this photo gives an idea of the thickness of the building's stone walls. While these would have undoubtedly retained heat better than a wood frame building, they did not eliminate the need for the sizable woodshed visible behind the school. As was often the case in rural schools, the parents of each student were expected to cut, split and deliver their share of the firewood.
